In 1982，Yuxi Prefectural Archives Department was established，which was under the jurisdiction of the Office of Yuxi Prefectural Party Committee of CPC and responsible for administrative work of archieves in the prefecture.Yuxi Prefectural Archives Institution was established in April 1984，which was also under the jurisdiction of the Office of Yuxi Prefectural Party Committee of CPC.In accordance with the Document (1985) No.19 issued by the Central Government ，the Prefectural Archives Department and the Archives Institution were put，in June 1988，under the jurisdiction of the Office of Yuxi Prefectural Government instead of the Office of the Yuxi Prefectural Party Committee.In accordance with the Document (1995) No.13 “Comments on Implementation of Reform Plan for Party and Government Organizations in Yuxi Prefecture”jointly issued by Yuxi Prefectural Party Committee of CPC and Yuxi Prefectural Government，Yuxi Prefectural Archives Department was dismantled in 1996 and Yuxi Prefectural Archives Bureau(at deputy county level)was set up at the same time.Yuxi Prefectural Archives Bureau and Yuxi Prefectural Archives Institution worked together with two boards but one group of staff executing two different functions.In the archives bureau (institution)，there are one office and three sections，I.C.the Office、the Professional Guiding Section、the Archives Administration Section and the Archives Compilation and Research Section，with 18 staff altogether.When Yuxi was changed from a prefecture into a city in June 1998，Yuxi Prefectural Archives Bureau (Institution)was also renamed as Yuxi Municipal Archives Bureau(institution).In the reform of Party and government organizations in 2002，the archives bureau (institution)was put under the jurisdiction of the Office of Yuxi Municipal Party Committee instead of the Office of Yuxi Municipal Government.At present，there are 15 persons in the archives bureau(institution)，including 8 undergraduates and 7 professional college graduates，with an average age of 36.As for professional titles，there are 2 associate professors of archives science，6 libratians and 2 assistant librarians.
Yuxi Municipal Archives Institution was completed and put into use in 1982，with a total floorage of 1,015 m2 and a usable floor area of 656.5 m2 (including 410.3 m2 for archives storehouses and 246.2 m2 for offices and reading rooms).
The archives institution has kept 39,491 volumes of archives in 121 general archives and 18,288 volumes (or copies)of materials collected from Party and government organizations directly under the Municipal Party Committee or the Municipal Government，non-governmental organizations、enterprises and public institutions.The collected and stored archieves include various documents and archives in respects of science and technology、accounting、arts、census、observation and survey of the environment、auditing、the archives in the Yuzu-language and the information concerning famous persons.A base for keeping archives with all necessary categories and reasonable structures is gradually taking shape.
Work of Archives Utilization:Since its establishment up to the end of 2000，Yuxi Municipal Archives Institutions has received 47,647 person-times to consult various archives and provided 143,091 volume-tiems of archives for the purpose of implementing policies、sloving disputes、developing economy、reforming organizational structures、compilingand revising historical data and for use in work，thus achieving better economic and social benefits.
In accordance with the regulations in the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Archives，Yuxi Municipal Archives Institution began to make open to the public its 4,463 volumes of archives in 67 general archives with a 100% proportion in the number of archives due to be open，thus realizing the transition of the archives work from the closed type to the opening type.
Construction of Professional Work in Archives:In order to optimize the structure in keeping archives，Yuxi Municipal Archives Institution has made appraisal and identification of 2,738 volumes of archives in 33 general archives with their storing periods expired so as to raise storing periods for 1,101 volumes and burn up 507 volumes without retaining value after relevant authority’s approval.After systematic arrangement， the stored archives have basically met the requirements for standardized and scientific management.A retrieval system has been preliminarily set up.Various retrieval tools ensure higher rates of accuracy and completeness in searching and using archives.
To fit in with the central work of Yuxi Municipal Party Committee and Yuxi Municipal Government as well as the demand for market economy，Yuxi Municipal Archives Institution is actively developing the information resources of archives by changing its service from passiveness to initiative.The archives institution has completed 19 materials in book form，such as “Historical Data and Materials Concerning Various Organizations in Yuxi Prefecture”，“A Collection of Documents Concerning Tobacco and Cigarette Industries in Yuxi”，“A Catalogue of Famous and Quality Local Products in Yuxi Prefecture”，“A Collection of Articles Concerning Yuxi Prefecture Published on Yunnan Daily”，“A Collection of Data Concerning Local Financial Revenues and Expenditures in Yuxi Prefecture During 40 Years”，“A Collection of People’s Daily Editorials”，“A Collection of Archives of Scientific and Technological Achievements in Yuxi Prefecture”，“A Collection of Documents Concerning Organizational Reform”，“A Guide to Yuxi Prefectural Archives Institution”and “Annals of Archives in Yuxi”.Yuxi Municipal Archives Institution was commended by the leaders of both Yuxi Municipal Party Committee and Government because of good reflection from readers and more significant social benefits，thus making active contribution to the construction of material and spiritual civiliazation.Through long-term efforts and practice，the m\archives institution has established more than 10 statistical accounts as archives and materials ，retrieval tools，utilization of archives，etc.All these will provide firsthand information for understanding work situation and carrying out archives guiding work.
Since 1991，in accordance with “Document Concerning Activity of Attaining the Required Standards and Upgrading for Archives Work at Prefectural and County Levels in Yunnan Province” issued by Yunnan Provincial Archives of attaining required standards and upgrading according to 8 items of standards for the assessment and successfully completed various work for reform and consolidation through constant efforts made by all of its staff members.Yuxi Municipal Archives Institutions attained the third-grade advanced standard at the provincial level in November 1992，was promoted to the second-grade advanced archives institution in August 1994 and further promoted to the first-grade advanced archives institution in September 1996，thus finally realizing scientific，standardized and institutionalized management of archives.
Yuxi Municipal Archives Institution was commended by Yunnan Provincial Archives Bureau with the title of advanced unit in 1989 and won a third prize of “Rich Collection and Storage of Archives”.Also，the archives institution was awarded the honorary title of advanced unit in the national archives system in November 1995 and the honorary title of advanced unit in the archives system in Yunnan Province respectively in 1996 and 1999.
